Why Is USDT Price Higher in India? The USDT Premium Explained
Why USDT often sells for more rupees than a dollar in India: today's live USDT premium vs USD/INR, the reasons behind it, and what it means for sellers.
By Bryan Aaron · Updated
Quick answer
USDT can trade above the US dollar rate in India because of demand for an easier dollar, banking and tax friction around crypto, P2P risk pricing and limited local supply. The gap, the 'USDT premium', changes daily; this page shows it live against USD/INR.
USDT is meant to be worth one US dollar, yet in India it often sells for more rupees than a dollar does. Here's today's live comparison, and why the gap (the “USDT premium”) exists.

Today's numbers
| Rate (live) | 1 unit in INR | vs US dollar |
|---|---|---|
| US dollar (mid-market, ExchangeRate-API) | ₹95.27 | — |
| USDT, market average (CoinGecko) | ₹94.89 | -0.40% |
| USDT, Disburz sell rate | ₹96.00 | +0.77% |

Why USDT can cost more than a dollar in India
- Demand for dollars. Buying dollars through banks has limits and paperwork (like the LRS limit), so some people pay extra for USDT as an easier dollar.
- Friction. Tax rules (30% on gains, 1% TDS) and limited banking for crypto make it harder to move money between INR and USDT, so prices don't line up perfectly with the dollar.
- P2P risk pricing. P2P sellers ask more because they carry the risk of receiving bad money.
- Local supply. When few people sell USDT in India, buyers bid the price up.
Why the premium jumped in June 2026
The gap usually sits around 3–4%. In late June 2026 it went above 8.5%, with USDT near ₹102.88 against a dollar rate of about ₹94.65, CoinDesk reported. The trigger was supply: on 17 June the Enforcement Directorate searched six premises in Bengaluru under FEMA, targeting crypto payment firms it alleged had moved over $265 million across borders with stablecoins. Liquidity providers pulled back from buying USDT abroad, the local pool tightened, and the price rose.
The lesson for sellers: the premium can widen or shrink fast, and it isn't guaranteed. Check today's numbers above before you sell, rather than an old screenshot.
What it means if you're selling
A premium works in your favour: you get more rupees per USDT than the dollar rate. Compare the final INR after fees, not the headline rate. Our best USDT to INR rate page shows the Disburz rate against the market live, after fees.
