Received USDT from Family Abroad? How to Convert It to INR in India

Family abroad sent you USDT? How to turn it into rupees in your Indian bank account without P2P, how gifts in crypto are taxed, and when a bank wire is better.

By Bryan Aaron · Updated

Quick answer

Ask your family to send USDT on TRC20 to your wallet or a Disburz deposit address, then sell it for INR paid straight to your bank with a UTR, not to P2P buyers. Crypto gifts from relatives aren't taxed when received; any gain when you sell is taxed at 30% plus cess.

General information, not tax or legal advice. Gift and remittance rules depend on who sends the money and why; check with a chartered accountant for large or regular transfers.

Many Indians working abroad now send money home as USDT instead of a bank wire: it arrives in minutes, works on weekends and costs little to send on TRC20. The person in India then has to turn it into rupees. Here's how to do that safely, and what to know about tax.

Family abroad sends USDT to India: they buy USDT, send it on TRC20 to an address starting with T, you sell it, and INR arrives in your Indian bank account with a UTR

How sending USDT home works

  1. The sender abroad buys USDT on an exchange in their country.
  2. They send it on TRC20 (Tron) to a wallet you control, such as Trust Wallet, or straight to the deposit address of a Disburz order.
  3. You sell the USDT for INR and the rupees land in your Indian bank account.

Make sure both of you use the same network. A TRC20 address starts with T. Sending USDT on Ethereum or BSC to a Tron address can lose the money; see TRC20 vs ERC20.

Turning the USDT into rupees in your bank

With Disburz you sign up with your name, email and phone (no documents to upload), add your bank account, and get a quote that shows the exact INR before anything is sent. Send the USDT to the order's deposit address and the payout partner pays INR to your account by IMPS, NEFT or RTGS, with a bank UTR as proof. Today it costs ₹50 fee + 3 USDT network deduction; on 1,000 USDT that's 0.35% (₹338.00). Check today's rate on USDT TRC20 to INR.

Don't sell family money to P2P buyers. If a buyer pays you with scam money, your account can be frozen, and family transfers tend to be exactly the savings you can least afford to have stuck. See P2P vs a crypto offramp.

Is USDT from family abroad taxed?

  • A gift from a relative (parents, spouse, siblings and other relatives as defined in the Income-tax Act) is generally not taxed when you receive it, including crypto.
  • A gift from someone who isn't a relative, like a friend, is taxable as income once gifts from non-relatives exceed ₹50,000 in the year.
  • When you sell the USDT, any gain is taxed at a flat 30% plus cess. Because USDT tracks the dollar, the gain is usually small, but report the sale in the VDA schedule of your return.
  • 1% TDS may be deducted on the sale on some platforms; it's credited to your PAN.

Keep a note of who sent each transfer, their relationship to you, the transaction hash and the UTR of your payout. More in crypto tax and TDS in India.

For large sums, such as a property purchase, a bank remittance gives you formal inward-remittance records that banks and tax officers expect. For quick help to family, USDT on TRC20 is hard to beat.

View all FAQs
Can my family abroad send me money in USDT?

Yes. They buy USDT abroad and send it on TRC20 to a wallet you control or to your Disburz deposit address. You then sell it for INR paid into your Indian bank account.

Is USDT received from a relative abroad taxable in India?

Gifts from relatives as defined in the Income-tax Act, including crypto, are generally not taxed when received. When you sell the USDT, any gain is taxed at 30% plus cess. Gifts from non-relatives above ₹50,000 a year are taxable.

Is it cheaper to send money to India in USDT or by bank transfer?

For smaller, quick transfers, USDT on TRC20 is often cheaper and faster. For large or regular transfers, like a property purchase, a bank remittance gives you formal inward-remittance records.

How do I sell USDT from family without my bank account getting frozen?

Sell to a business that pays you from its own bank account, an Indian exchange or a direct offramp, rather than P2P buyers whose money could be linked to fraud.
